Digestive discomfort is one of the most common complaints people bring to a Hakim, and often the root cause is not a single food but a pattern of daily habits. Unani medicine has long emphasized the idea of “Hazm” — proper digestion — as the foundation of overall health.
Start with eating at regular times each day. Irregular meal timing confuses the body’s natural digestive rhythm. Try to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner around the same hours daily.
Warm water, not cold, is traditionally recommended after meals in Unani practice, as cold water is believed to slow the digestive fire. Sipping warm water or a light herbal infusion 20–30 minutes after eating is a simple habit worth building.
Avoid overeating. Unani physicians traditionally advise leaving a small amount of space in the stomach rather than eating until completely full — a principle echoed in many modern nutrition guidelines as well.
Chew slowly and mindfully. Digestion begins in the mouth, and rushing meals is one of the most overlooked causes of bloating and discomfort.
Finally, gentle movement — even a short walk — after a meal is traditionally encouraged over lying down immediately, which can slow digestion.
These habits are general wellness guidance and are not a substitute for personalized advice. If digestive discomfort is frequent or severe, consult a qualified Hakim or physician.
